About Zeya Nature Reserve

Established in 1987, Zeya Nature Reserve (also known as Zeysky Zapovednik) is located in Amur Oblast in the Russian Far East. It protects a significant portion of the Upper Zeya River basin within the Stanovoy Highlands, an area characterized by rugged mountains, deep river valleys, wide floodplains, and pristine coniferous forests. The reserve spans a vast area dominated by taiga ecosystems, including spruce, fir, larch, and pine, and supports diverse flora and fauna adapted to the continental climate of the region. Zeya's wildlife includes brown bears, Siberian tigers, Siberian musk deer, sable, and numerous bird species, making it an important refuge for endangered and vulnerable species. The reserve is primarily focused on scientific research, ecological monitoring, and conservation, with limited controlled access for eco-tourism and educational visits. Visitors to Zeya can experience remote wilderness trekking, wildlife observation, and pristine riverine landscapes. The area’s mountainous terrain and thick forests appeal to adventurous travelers seeking solitude and a deep connection with nature. Notable natural landmarks include the Zeya River, flowing through the reserve in a series of rapids and floodplains, and the surrounding Stanovoy mountain ranges which offer panoramic views and varied habitats. Due to its remote location and strict protection status as a zapovednik (strict nature reserve), public access is restricted, preserving the area's ecological integrity and making it a critical stronghold for wildlife in the region.
